Maty Ezraty dies: 'The Yogi Who Stayed In It'

Aug 11, 2022

"We need someone who can fight for yoga, not just for yoga to survive."

On the evening of July 9, 2019, Maty Ezraty, co-founder of YogaWorks and an important advocate of modern yoga, passed away in Japan at the age of 55.

On July 6-7, she just finished her workshop in Japan and is going to Shanghai for a 7-day intensive workshop. Unexpectedly, the journey came to an abrupt end.

The sudden passing of Maty is a great loss for the yoga community.

I believe that many yogis have watched the classic teaching video led by Patabi Joyce, and have noticed a practitioner who has a powerful aura. She has a determined demeanor, and her posture is smooth and natural. One of the six disciples of the doorman, and one of the few women who have completed the Ashtanga Advanced Sequence.

Just when you thought Maty would go deep into Ashtanga yoga, she started YogaWorks with Chuck Miller in 1987, at a time when yoga studios only offered single-style yoga classes, a school that offered multiple yoga styles (including Ashtanga Yoga and Iyengar Yoga).

YogaWorks has grown rapidly, offering more than 120 classes a week and serving more than 700 students every day. She has trained Seane Corn, Annie Carpenter, Kathryn Budig, Shiva Rea, Natasha Rizopolus and many others who are now world-renowned yoga teachers.

As a professional yoga mat factory with more than 10 years of experience, we supply all types of yoga mats, yoga clothing and sports fitness equipment.
